Sampler of embroidered woollen canvas with coloured silks in cross, tent, satin, long and short and stem stitches. The main part of the sampler is occupied by a long poem 'The Shepherd and the Philosopher', embroidered in two columns. Above are lines of floral and geometric motifs, the alphabet, numbers 1 to 7 and the inscription 'Sarah Ellis her Work in the Eighth Year of her age in the Year 1779'. Between the two columns of the poem and surrounding the whole design are wavy stems bearing leaves, roses and other flowers.
