Object history | Description from the acquisition register Parasol English or French; 1850-1875 The parasol has a turned ivory handle unscrewing in the centre, ivory ferrule, and ivory tips to the ribs. The frame is of japanned metal (square section) and the ribs of whalebone. The cover is of white satin printed with bunches of brightly coloured flowers, red and yellow roses alternately predominating. White silk fringe, lining and cord. [...]No evidence for accurate dating is available. It would seem that whalebone continued to be used for parasol ribs for some years after the patenting of the [illegible] frame (Paragon rib) 1852. |
