Place Of Origin

A woman's fancy dress of white silk tobine with vertical stripes and floral trails in shades of green, and salmon-pink. It is made from the bodice of a 1770s gown, sewn to its matching petticoat of the 1770s. The bodice is in the English (tight-back) style with elbow-length sleeves. The bodice and sleeves are lined with unbleached linen. The bodice meets at centre front with a 'false stomacher' with three buttoned tabs edged with a green and white silk fringe with pink, green and white floss knots. The skirt is flat-pleated to the bodice. The skirt is made of the petticoat, with the back opening at centre front, aligned with the bodice fronts. The hem of the petticoat/skirt is faced with a deep band of white silk taffeta. Above the hem is a deep flounce of silk, box-pleated and edged with the silk fringe. The skirt front has hooks and eyes, the bodice fronts hooks and thread bars.
