Decorated with the title of a poem by François Villon (b.1431) this goblet is one of several which Gallé made, using Villon's poetry as inspiration. The theme of mediaeval legend was first featured in a Gallé display at the 1884 exhibition of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs. The two dates on this goblet probably celebrate both the 1884 first showing of the type and the 1900 exhibiton at which this particular piece was displayed.

'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900'

Inscribed Ballades des Dames du Temps Jadis after the title of a poem by François Villon (born 1431), this goblet is one of a group in which Gallè used this favorite source of inspiration. The theme of mediaeval legend was first featured in a Gallè display at the 1884 exhibition of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs. The two dates on this goblet probably celebrate both this showing of the type and the turn-of-the-century exhibition at which this particular piece was displayed.
