Place of origin |
A fragment of a linen tunic, including a roundel and portion of a narrow band. Egyptian, possibly Akhmim, ca. AD400-600. Tapestry-woven in red wool and undyed linen thread (s-spun). The roundel has a boy holding a bird, surrounded first by a small reverse arcade border and then foliated, heart-shaped ornaments. Similar, larger, ornaments run down the band. Both have borders of scrolling waves. The linen tunic is mostly plain weave with inlaying (with thicker threads) to form simple banded decoration across areas of the tunic. On the reverse side long threads reamin at the edge of each of these bands. 20x15 tpc; differing thread diameters. There is some light red staining and some holes.
