Sampler

mid 17th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Long sampler cut from tightly-woven embroidered linen. The top edge is a selvedge, the two sides have been turned in and hemmed, and the bottom has been cut off and left raw. The top 9.375 inches (24 cms) are divided into six bands increasing in width from 0.625 (1 cms) to 2.75 inches (7 cms). Each is bordered by a double row of pulled fabric opening and is divided into tiny drawn-thread work squares with overcast bars. The squares are worked with simple interlace fillings, twisted bars and a weaving stitch to form a series of geometric patterns, with the exception of band four which has a stiff plant motif flanked by birds and S-shapes.

A seventh band, 0.875 (2 cms) wide, is divided into three rows of cutwork squares with 'woven' bars and snowflake fillings of detached buttonholed bars and interlace stitches. This band is unfinished and the remainder of the sampler is unworked except for three samples of Algerian eye stitch, two are simple rows of seven and four stitches, and the third is possibly a letter y or h.
