*The equipment though designed in the 1930s was not manufactured until the late 1950s or early 1960s and was sold as 'Abbatt Developmental Toys for Assessment & Training' in England where Morgenstern and his family had settled in the late 1930s. This was probably the first range of commercially produced toys designed
for the disabled.
Gridboard; square block of 3/4in. plywood with the top and sides varnished; the playing surface is cut into squares; 100; and the centre of each square is drilled with a hole.
The Abbatt catalogue describes the Gridboard as follows: The gridboard with its slots and holes is a developmental toy which offers a wide potential. With it a child can make pictures; patterns and constructions. He can also work out spatial relationships by using the painted wooden
houses to make villages or towns. The special Threading Squares can be used to make different sized compartments for sorting activities.
