Handkerchief

1850s (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Handkerchief of cream silk woven in tabby with three broad stripes, over 2 inches wide, formed by lilac-coloured silk weft threads and flanked by very narrow lines of white and black. Three similar black lines, with white between them, are placed half an inch in from either side. These stripes formed by threads are crossed at intervals of roughly 3.5 inches by 4 groups of two narrow stripes formed by warp threads of lilac silk with, above them, decoration made by additional pattern warps. These pattern warps form turreted strips graded in colour from white through shades of lilac to maroon. At one end of the pattern formed by the warp are three narrow lines of lilac similar to those in black at the sides. All the warp threads and a portion of the weft threads form a fringe on all four sides.
