1870-1899 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Stole of black machine lace. Made with a heavy black silk on the Pusher lace machine. Traversed twist net with solid 'clothwork' motifs. Some areas with delicate imitation half-stitch work and 'honeycomb' fillings. The solidly-worked areas are outlined with a thick cordonnet put in by hand and the raw edges have been turned and hemmed, and are decorated with a row of large picots.

All four edges are decorated with a border pattern of solidly-worked leaves and floral sprays arranged within a scalloped inner line. The centre of the stole is filled with a repeating one-way-up pattern of large ovals on which are imposed floral sprays with sprays extending from one oval to the next.
