Dolly at the Window

Paper Doll
1920s (made)
Place of origin

1. cut out doll; thin card printed in colours to show a girl with black hair wearing a white union suit and socks with black strapped shoes. At the back is a glued on strip of card; with a fold line near the top which forms a stand for the doll. The doll (as with others in the series) is shown with her arms behind her back, allowing her to wear a variety of costumes with the arms in different positions.
2. coat of dark red with a white collar and black belt. The arms and hands are shaped above the head and are linked by the hat. The hands are gloved in white and the hat is grey with a black band. When on the doll the head is between the raised arms and there is a slit at the base of the skirt which goes behind the legs. On the left hand is a tag with the number 4a.
3. bathing suit; blue and white stripes; left arm is extended out from the body and the right is holding a red and grey bucket. A tag on the left shoulder has the number 4b
4. dress; shaded white with red belt and pink collar and left cuff.
On the right side is the head and arms of a yellow teddy bear. At the base of the skirt is a strip of card which has broken on one side; it would normally go behind the legs of the doll
5. hairband; strips of blue and green at the front with a plain back to slip over the doll's head
6. cover; light brown paper printed in black to show a window and a tree. The window is cut so it can be opened. In the back leaf are two strips cut out (top one is broken on one side) into which the stand of the doll slips to allow the doll to be secured. When the window is opened the doll's head appears behind it.
