Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A man's coat and waistcoat of red silk velvet. The coat has a round neckline, bound with a narrow strip of velvet. The shaped, two-piece sleeves end above the wrist with a round cuff (13 cm at top, 14.5 at bottom). The coat fronts curve from neck to hem with skirts below the hip, arranged in pleats (16 cm) one in front, one in back at the side. There is an inverted pleat on each side of the centre back opening. There is a scalloped pocket flap on each coat front at hip level. The pockets and sleeves are lined with bleached linen, the rest of the coat with white twill silk. The coat fronts and edges of the back vent are interlined with buckram. There are 10 velvet-covered buttons on the right front from neck to pocket flap, with corresponding buttonholes, worked in red silk twist. There are 3 buttons below the pockets, with 3 buttonholes on the pocket flaps, the outer 2 cut, but not through the lining. There are 3 buttons and uncut buttonholes on each cuff, one button above the pleats, one holding them at the hem and one on the back side pleat. There are 3 unworked buttonholes on each side of the back vent at the top.

The waistcoat fronts and back skirts are made of the red silk velvet; the backs above the waist are made of pink twil worsted. The neckline is round and bound with a narrow strip of velvet. The waistcoat fronts curve from neck to hem with skirts below the hip, ending between top and mid-thigh. There is a scalloped pocket flap on each waistcoat front. The pockets are lined with bleached linen. Part of the fronts, the back skirts and the pocket flaps are lined with white twill silk, the remainder of the fronts and the back torso with white fustian. There are 11 small, velvet-covered buttons on the right front, with corresponding buttonholes, worked in red silk twist, on the left front. There are 3 buttons below the pocket flaps and 3 buttonholes on the flap, the outer 2 cut, but not through to the lining.

The addition of a partial lining of cotton muslin over the shoulders on the inside of the coat is a later repair.
