Black top hat of silk plush and with a tall 'stove pipe' crown slightly 'belled' at the top and a corded black silk ribbon hat-band. The inner head is of black cloth, possibly oil cloth, and the lining is of pink paper over laid with thread, possibly silk. The inside of the crown is of the same paper with stamped decoration and a printed label of gilt bears the name 'ERNESTE PARIS'.

Physical description
Black top hat of silk plush and with a tall 'stove pipe' crown slightly 'belled' at the top and a corded black silk ribbon hat-band. The inner head is of black cloth, possibly oil cloth, and the lining is of pink paper over laid with thread, possibly silk. Purchased. Registered File number 1986/400.
The tall top hat reached its apogee in the 1860s and after that period the height of top hats gradually diminished. The slightly 'belled' top or widening of the crown was another fashionable characteristic for hats of this type, that too disappeared as the height was reduced.
