Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Woman’s smock of bleached linen with a high neck and turn-down collar. The front and back are 1 rectangle of linen with 2 triangular gores on each side. The sleeves are rectangular, cartridge-pleated into ⅜-inch (8 mm) wide cuffs; the sleeve gussets are cut diagonally into the body of the smock. The side and sleeve seams are joined by ¾ inch (1.9 mm) bobbin lace insertions of pink silk and bleached linen thread. The gore seams and hem are embroidered over with pink silk floss. Counted-thread stitch embroidery with pink silk floss in a geometric pattern decorates the sleeves and neck opening. The 2-inch (5 cm) deep collar is made of narrow strips of linen joined by a deep bobbin lace insertion of pink silk and bleach linen thread. The neck opening, collar and cuffs are edged with ½-inch (1.3 cm) bobbin lace, embroidered with pink silk floss. There is a buttonhole worked in pink silk floss at the end of each cuff and the neck fastens with a 1/16-inch (1.5 mm) wide flat braid of pink and white silk floss.
