Mantle

ca. 1890 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Mantle of cream twilled wool with an applied pattern of machine stitched cream braid. Hip length and fitted to the waist at the back, and looser fitting with longer scarf ends at the front. The shoulders are shaped and the mantle is flared at the side to accommodate the arms. It fastens down the centre front with hooks and eyes, and has a narrow band collar. The edges are scalloped and trimmed with a cursive pattern in the braid. The decorative panels, which are diamond shaped and filled with applied lines, are edged with leaf ornament and are placed so that they emphasize the shape at the back, where they also suggest a small belt on the arm panels at the front. Lined with white silk.
