Cameo-glass Vase
About 1900

Gallé produced the subtle shades and textural variations seen here by using a combination of techniques. To make a deep, rich ground, he built up layers of glass coloured with different metal oxides. To create the surface decoration, he carved through the layers while the glass was still mallebble, in a technique called 'marquetry on glass'. The flowers are day lilies.

'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900'

Gallè’s enormous vocabulary of glass techniques included the subtlest of colourings with the use of oxides or iron, cobalt, manganese, copper and chromium. In this vase he uses these metals to achieve a variety of amber-coloured glass layers employed in a technique called marquetrie sur verre (marquetry on glass). While in a warm malleable state the main body of the vase is impressed with layers of differing colours which are then carved on the wheel.
