Valance
1600-1629 (made)
The main feature of this embroidery is the central scene set in a cartouche, almost certainly representing Berardo de Ferro returning in triumph to Marsala (the town of which he was Governor) after fighting against the French at the time of the Sicilian Vespers, towards the end of the 13th century. The design includes his arms.
On the left side of this central panel the design suggests a woodland scene with trees, hillocks, flowers, birds, rabbits, snails, tortoises, and at the end a man is seated at the door of a hut playing an instrument. This design is reversed and repeated on the right side of the centre panel.
