Petticoat
ca. 1870 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Petticoat of plain white cotton. Waist to ankle-length and made with a slightly flared front breadth, similar at each side and two breadths at the back, each about 22 inches wide. The front is slightly gathered, the sides more tightly gathered and the back is very tightly gathered into the waistband. Above the ankle is attached a double layer flounce which are trimmed with a machine-made coarse cotton lace border. There is a centre back plaquet and the petticoat fastens with a white tape threaded through the waistband. The garment is machine stitched and it seems probable that each panel is made from a full breadth of material machine-stitched over each selvedge. Flounced hem with lace trim.
