Bedgown

1740-1760 (made), 1870-1900 (altered)
Place of origin

Woman’s bedgown of 2 layers of white silk sarsenet quilted with silk thread, in a diamond pattern with a wide border of flowers and leaves along the front edges, hem and cuffs.

It was originally T-shaped with the front, back and sleeve on each side cut in one piece. It has been altered, probably in the late 19th century for fancy dress. The centre back sleeve was taken in, the front cut at the waist, darts added to the front and the lower half of the bedgown pleated at the centre back and sides to make it fitted and ribbon fastenings added.
