Place of origin |
Hanging and fragment of woven wool. The whole surface is covered with zig-zagging chevrons of varying heights in brightly coloured wools. Two stripes of deeper chevrons are divided by wider areas of rippling pattern.
The wools are in shades of bright green from a lime to a very dark blue-green, yellow, orange, vermilion, peachy-tan, fawn and other browns to a very dark brown. These are arranged in bands of orange tones, green tones, orange again, and of green divided by a brown stripe, repeating every 24.5 inches. A little creamy white wool and white linen are also used for the pattern. This pattern is woven into a base of brown hemp warp and weft.
The two end borders, which are woven separately, have a band of small chevrons in the same colours as the field, edged by strips in which the ground weave shows beneath a blurred repeating pattern in yellow and pale orange. At the outer edge of this is a wide plain strip with reddish-brown weft shot through at intervals.
The side border contains the name of the weaver in white cotton, with a strip of the border design on the inside, and the outer edging as described above.
The fragment is from the hanging and shows a part of a band of chevrons in green and part of a band in pink and brown.
