Carpet Fragment

1840-1850 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Double-cloth carpet fragment in two small parts of a large-scale pattern incorporating a large scrolling acanthus leaf and strapwork with studding. Large areas of the pattern are not in separable 'cloths' but are woven in a tight twill, on one plane, and the two warp systems and two weft systems lying parallel and interwoven alternately, presumably with the help of a jacquard.

Warp of white worsted and light brown worsted. Weft of white wool and bands of deep pink, pink-tan and brown wool.

One fragment has a selvedge.

The two fragments sewn together with warp in wrong direction.
