16th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Cover or panel of darned and knotted work made from three-ply linen thread in a technique comparable to bobbin lace. The pattern is darned in with a single thread over a series of vertically hanging threads. The vertical threads emerge from the patterned areas to form a knotted mesh, with two diagonal threads which are knotted into the edge of the patterned area, comparable in shape to a five-hole Flemish bobbin mesh but made with single instead of paired threads, and with knots instead of twists.
The panel is divided horizontally into two identical compartments containing vases of flowers and scrolling leafy stems. The interstices contains birds and flowers. A narrow border contains a continuous scrolling stem.
