A tapestry woven roundel in linen and wool. Egyptian, possibly Akhmim, ca. AD200-500.
Physical description
A roundel from a linen cloth, tapestry-woven in purple/maroon wool and undyed linen thread. At the centre is a vase/amphora with a tree coming from the top. This is surrounded by a solid maroon border (approx. 44mm wide). Over the centre of this border is an interlaced guilloche design (approx. 22mm wide). The outer edge of this border is of inverted scallops with spade shaped leaves filling inbetween. The piece has some holes.
