Object history
This outfit was designed and made for the book launch of painter Eileen Agar's (1899-1991) autobiography 'A Look at My Life' (1988). Agar was friends with translator and surrealist writer and artist Michael Bullock (1918-2008), who introduced Agar to his granddaughter, Susannah Cartwright (born 1965), a textile designer. Agar invited Cartwright to work on an outfit for the book launch. This turned into a collaboration; the pair looked through Agar's portfolios for inspiration for the textile design, which was finalised by Cartwright. Cartwright hand screen printed the cotton textile which was used for the outfit, which was made by Richmond-based company Design Responses Ltd.. Agar wore the dress for the book launch, and also when interviewed by Jonathan Ross on The Last Resort in 1988.
