Chalice Veil

1600-1625 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Chalice veil made of slate-blue silk embroidered with silver and silver-gilt thread and cord, and with polychrome silks in laid and couched work, long and short and satin stitches. It has a little padded work.
The edges are trimmed with vandykes of silver-gilt bobbin lace.

In the centre is the Holy Monogram, a cross and what looks like three nails, surrounded by a rayed sun. The remaining ground is filled with a symmetrical strapwork design of broad gold lines which form oval, heart-shaped and diamond-shaped compartments. Floral sprigs develop from the centres and intersections of the lines to fill the interspaces.
