Gallery label | Needlework has long been a favourite technique to embellish bags. 18th-century designs for embroidered bags by Margaretha Helm were printed and circulated in pattern books for others to copy. Hilde Wagner-Ascher created her own technical drawing to precisely record the geometric design for her clutch bag. She used squared paper to map every individual stitch for the embroiderer to follow. Viewed alongside the finished bag, the drawing shows how faithful the final piece remained to the designer’s vision.
