Pyjama Suit
ca. 1925 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This pyjama suit consists of an elaborately embroidered pyjama top and a pair of bright green pyjama trousers.
Pyjamas first became fashionable for women in the 1920s as a way to be stylishly dressed at home, often when entertaining informally. It was not yet considered acceptable for women to wear trousers in public, but gradually pyjama suits began to appear as beachwear in fashionable summer resorts.
Early pyjama suits were influenced by eastern styles and often cut in a flat 2-dimensional pattern. These pyjama trousers are cut in two pieces joined together at the side seams, the waist is gathered at the top with an elastic tape, threaded through a small channel.
The hem of the trousers is finished with a band of black silk on either leg with green embroidered Chinese cloud motifs.
