Historical context | Afghan jerkins, jackets and coats were key items of Hippy dress. Originally worn by Afghani shepherds, they are made from undyed skins, cured in urine, hand-embroidered and brought into Europe and America along the Hippy Trail. This coat formerly belonged to the owner of the boutique Oxus, which retailed ethnic clothes and artifacts at World's End, Chelsea. Indian garments and leather sandals as well as denim jeans, which were often hand-patched and embroidered, aslo became mainstay of the Hippy wardrobe. |
