Object history | Registered File number 1995/1422, Streetstyle exhibition 1994-1995, in the exhibition it was part of an outfit called 'Beatnik USA/UK late 1950s' (includes the leotard and leggings T.957-1994). 'The Beatniks came after the forties when everything was Doris Day and this was the complete opposite. The hair was the most noticeable thing - it was always very long. A lot of the girls were interested in dance so they would wear leotards and ballet shoes, there were always lots of these in charity stores so they could buy them cheaply. Some of them wore wooly scarves... they were all covered up from head to toe in black - like a bunch of crows!' (Carolyn Cassady). |
