Bust

2nd half of the 16th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This terracotta bust was made by Alessandro Vittoria (b. 1525-d. 1608) in the second half of the 16th century. This comes from Palazzo Manfrin, Venice. The identification, which has not been corroborated, is suggested by an inscription painted in a 19th century hand on the base, recorded in a photograph of 1871. This also gave the date 1570. The subject wears armour, and had been awarded the French Order of St. Michael, the insignia of which hang on his chest. The device above, showing an eagle with two branches of palm, has not been explained.
