The Martyrdom of a female Saint

Relief
ca. 1750 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

On the left St. Regina standing between two gaolers, one of whom is holding the end of the thong which binds her wrists and at the same time points towards a sculpture of a caracoling horse on a pedestal immediately behind. St. Regina however, looks upwards towards a vision of Christ on the Cross born by cherubim in clouds and rays of glory; one of the cherubs carries a martyr's crown and another a palm. On the extreme left, partly obscured by the left gaoler, are two men, one of whom is in the act of raising a cross. On the right, a king sits on a throne placed on a dais, surrounded by curtains and attended by a military figure and a small figure holding a cushion. A soldier lifts a curtain on the right of the dais. Behind, on the roof-top of a building, which appears to have two spires in the background, three female figures and a child attitudinise in prayer and dismay. A cherub blowing a trumpet flies out from behind one of the spires. In the foreground, a reclining female figure with a child looks towards the king.
