This terracotta bust represents Cosimo II de' Medici (1590-1621), Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1609-1621. It is one of several other from the prototype. Traditionally attributed to the court sculptor Pietro Tacca, they might in fact have been made by Giovanni Gonnelli, called 'Il Cieco di Gambassi' because he was said to be a blind sculptor and becare particularly famous for his skills.

Several versions of this terracotta bust are known:
- Museo Nazionale del Bargello (Inventario 1897, no. 393), yellow terracotta, h. 48 cm incl the base.
- Speed Art Museum, Kentucky (no. 58, 4), terracotta, h. 50.5cm including base
- Museo Guarnacci, Volterra, terracotta, h. 53.5 cm including base
- past sale Christie's London, 5 July 2013, no. 79, terracotta, h. 51 cm including base (as attributed to Giovanni Gonnelli).

While in the Chaïkin collection there were two attempts of selling the bust in auction: Sotheby's May 16, 1968, lot 102 and Christie's, April 30, 1974, lot 161;
