Carved wooden equestrian statue of the Grand Dauphin (Louis XV), French, late 17th to early 18th century

The Grand Dauphin, son of Louis XIV of France. Equestrian figure in painted wood on a contemporary wooden base. A young man riding a dapple grey horse. He wears a red clock lined with white over plate body armour below which shows the full skirt of a long embroidered coat. Red breeches are partly covered by the long leather boots. In his gloved right hand he holds a baton decorated with fleurs-de-lys and on his head is a feather tricorne hat. THe Order of the St. Esprit is suspended on a scarf at his side.

Given by Lady Juliet Duff in memory of Lieutenant Edward Horner, 18th Hussars. Acquired by the Donor's step-father, Lord Ripon for £200 and bought at the sale of his possessions after his death by donor for 'just under 200' in 1924.
