Group

late 17th or early 18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This ivory group represents the Rape of a Sabine Woman. This group is adapted from the two uppermost figures of Giovanni Bologna's Rape of the Sabenes in the Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence. It seems to depend not from the marble original but from a bronze reduction like that in the Museo Nazionale, Florence. The wooden base suggests that though poor in quality, it may be of some antiquity and may date from the late 17th or early 18th century.
