Place of origin |
The heavy forms seen in this relief are typical of work produced in Navarre and Aragon in the second half of the sixteenth century, where the predominant style was that of those Spanish sculptors known as Romanists, so called because they were greatly influenced by contemporary sculpture being produced in Rome, particularly the work of Michaelangelo. Although there are comparative pieces exist, the classical forms and solid anatomy seen in those pieces are not sufficiently close to this work to warrant an attribution to a specific artist, or even to an exact location within Navarre or Aragon.
