Rosewater Bottle and Stand
1882

The Heckert glasshouse, founded in 1866, specialised in display pieces in the styles of various periods and cultures. The design of this bottle derives from Indian bhidri metalwares, of black alloy damascened with silver. Critics and designers admired bhidri ware for its naturalism and elegant use of pattern to complement form.

'American and European Art and Design 1800-1900'

The Heckert glass-house at Petersdorff in Silesia, founded in 1866, specialised in display pieces in the styles of various periods and cultures. This example, bought from the manufacturers, imitates Indian Bhidri wares, of black alloy damascened with silver, which had been shown at international exhibitions since 1851. These wares were much admired for their stylized naturalism and elegant arrangement of pattern to complement form. They were first copied in glass by J. & L. Lobmeyr of Vienna in 1873.
