Head
19th century (made), 16th century (designed), 1515 (made)
Artist/Maker |
Creating a mould from an artwork enables multiple copies to be made. These casts reproduce the head of Moses from a marble statue carved by Michelangelo Buonarroti in around 1515 for the tomb of Pope Julius II in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome. With important works, several cast makers might take moulds, and each mould might produce many casts. The V&A commissioned casts to support the teaching of drawing.
