The St. Petersburg porcelain factory was established in 1744 under the Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, and remained under the patronage of subsequent rulers until Tsar Nicholas was dethroned in 1917. Throughout this period European tastes dominated. This service was made in the period of Tsar Alexander I (1801-1825) who appointed Count D. A. Guryev as manager. Gurbey reorganised the structure of the factory and imported leading artists and technicians form Sèvres, Paris and Berlin. The overall artistic style, however, remained neo-classical.
