This cup and saucer was made at the porcelain factory establishedby Wilhelm von Rotberg in about 1757 in Gotha, Thuringia, in Germany for the production of small sets of tablewares etc. It was sold to Prince August von Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg in 1802 and he let it to the court chamberlain Friedrich Egidius Henneburg (d.1834), initially in partnership with the former managers Schulz & Co. They were the sole proprietor by 1814. Although extremely modest, with this illustrious background and, it is assumed, its inclusion in the company's display in the Great Exhibition, London, 1851, the Museum accepted it as a gift from the exhibition's Commissioners in 1858.
