Vase Painted with a Port Scene
About 1820

In decorating its Neo-classical wares, the Le Nove factory made great use of engravings published by the Remondini family in the nearby city of Bassano. Scenes of battles and ports were particularly popular. This view of a Mediterranean port was probably the work of Giovanni Marcon, Le Nove's principal painter.

The Le Nove factory, better known for its later creamware production, was established in 1728 and was subsequently let to various proprietors. Under Giovanni Baroni the neo-classical tradition was maintained, and much use was made of engravings, printed by Remondini of Bassano, in the Painting of battle and port scenes, This vase shows European merchants in contemporary costume in an oriental or North African port, and may be attributed to the prinicpal painter at Le Nove, Giovanni Marcon. The factory mark GB NOVE is painted on a bale in the harbour.
