Oval Intaglio of black Jasper ware depicting the Dipping of the Infant Achilles. A baby Achilles is held by an ankle by a robed woman (his mother Thetis)who bares one of her breasts. He is dangled above a large urn. In Tetis' right hand she holds a flaming torch. To the right a man (Achilles' father Peleus) kneels towards the urn with a torch over each shoulder and his head at the height of the baby's. A ram's skull is hung on the trunk of the young tree to the left of the trio.
