Jug of lead-glazed earthenware, lower part swelling out with moulded decoration beneath the spout, a row of dots below the upper rim and an animal's head on the handle. The moulded parts and the foot painted in gold and brownish red, the sides with two transfer-printed scenes in black; one shows a crimson battlefield, the other a woman seated on a chair, with her head in her hands, in a room with four children over which hovers an angel holding a ribbon inscribed 'Royal Patriotic Fund'. Below the moulded dots under the upper rim is a transfer-printed ribbon running in spiral form round a stalk with laurel leaves on it. The underside has a transfer-printed martial trophy on a plinth with a crowned cartouche containing the words 'The Royal Patriotic Jug Published by S. Alcock & Co. Hill Pottery, Burslem, January 1. 1855', below which is a diamond mark and the words 'G. EYRE DESIGT'.
