Beaker of porcelain painted with enamels and gilded. Inverted truncated-cone shape. Painted with the figure-subjects of Sappho and Phaon within an oval with the title inscribed below. The reverse is decorated with rosettes and stars in gold on a wide, pale salmon-red band, with a border of floral ornament in blue and gold above, and gilt festoons below.

One of a pair with C.540A-1935. Formerly in the collection of Capt. H. H. Spender-Clay. The subject is copied from a design by Angelica Kauffmann, engraved by T. Kirk, and published in 1794.
