Cup and saucer with bas-relief scenes circa 1750 hard-paste porcelain painted in colours and gold cup h 7,6 cm; saucer diam. 13,2 cm no mark inv. 3385&A-1853 purchase: Bandinel Collection Cup and saucer decorated with bas-relief scenes, handle in the shape of two entwined branches. The saucer is decorated with four cartouches and festoons of fruit and flowers in relief. The gold is painted over a red base which is characteristic of the earliest period of production at Doccia. On the cup there are two mythological scenes taken from Les Metamorphoses d’Ovide by abbot Antoine Banier: one represents the Rape of Proserpine (BANIER 1732, vol. I, p. 162), engraved by Philip van Gúnst; the other one is a loose interpretation of an engraving of the stories of Achilles (BANIER 1732, vol. II, p. 419), based on a design by Sebastien Le Clerc, executed by Jacob Folkema. Both of the lead plaques are in the Museo di Doccia (inv. 6485, inv. 6460). Moreover, in the same museum there is a slate model with bas-reliefs in wax for a cup of the same type with a central figure that represents the same Rape of Proserpine that was used in this cup (inv. 5448). Porcelain with bas-relief scenes in the past has always been attributed to the Neapolitan factory of Capodimonte and this cup was registered at the museum with this attribution when it arrived in 1853. It is interesting to note, however, that in the Register of the Victoria & Albert there is a handwritten note that connects it with two vases from the Doccia factory that have a similar kind of decoration and the Ginorimark of a gold star.
