Panel

18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This tile panel was made in Rotterdam, and an original cartoon still exists in the Municipal Archive in that town. This is a drawing on a thin sheet of paper, the outlines of which were pricked with a needle. This sheet was placed over the tiles and powdered charcoal was dusted or ‘pounced’ through the holes and onto the glaze below. The pounced outlines on the glaze were then traced over by the tile painter.
The design for this particular tile panel was copied from an engraving by Joseph Wagner (1706-1780), published in Venice in 1764, after a design by the painter Giuseppe Zocchi (1711-1767).
