1580-1620 (made)
Place of origin |
In the Netherlands, painted tin-glazed tiles shifted from floor to wall around 1580. The change heralded a golden age of tile-making, as practical and decorative tiles became an essential feature in the homes of the rapidly expanding middle class.
In earlier polychrome wall tiles such as these, a group of four tiles made up the repeating pattern. From around 1620, each individual tile contained the whole repeating pattern.
