Object history
Bought from the Guthrie Collection (of mainly Indian arms, Chinese and Japanese porcelain, jades, enamels and lacquer wares) sold at Christies, London, third day's sale 14th May 1875, lot 467. Described as 'A casket of coloured earthenware with arabesque ornaments in relief' (purchased by Whitehead for £26, presumably T.M. Whitehead from whom the Museum purchased the casket. He might well have bid directly on the Museum's behalf).
Production
Erroneously described as 'oriental' at time of acquisition in 1875.
