Object history
One of 96 pieces of Gothic architectural decoration, chiefly of oak, consisting of panels, friezes, pilasters, etc., museum numbers 8129-1863 to 8244-1863, average dimensions 20" x 12". English, Flemish, etc., 15th and 16th centuries.
Transferred to South Kensington Museum from Office of Works (RF 52/1567)
These pieces were collected by Pugin and used as models by the Thames Bank Workshops for the construction of the new Palace of Westminster.

Recorded in an undated (possibly c.1863, with later annotations) departmental list as:

8224-1863:
'Panel of oak, carved in openwork. German; 15th cent.y
H. 17 1/4 in., W. 11 3/8 in.
In the centre is a wreathed helmet from which is suspended a concave shield and tasselled strings; on the helmet is an ape holding an apple. The rest of the panel is filled in with scrolling thistle foliage.

'Panel of carved oak. English; about 1500.
H. 14 3/8 in., W. 9 1/4 in.
Decorated with a round-headed arch filled in wiht tracery and enriched with leaf ornament; the spandrels also contain leaves.

'Panel of oak carved in openwork.

Decorated with scrolling and interlacing stems bearing a flower and leaves.

8224C-1863:
'Cupboard door of carved oak. French (?); late 15th cent.y
H. 16 in., W. 13 5/8 in.
It is decorated with a large panel containing a crowned shield bearing a dolphin within a crocketted ogee arch, which is further filled in with a diaper pattern. There are two small square panels containing tracery, one above and the other below the space for the lockplate.
