Long arm chair, ‘Floating Dock’ designed by Jørn Utzon in 1967 and manufactured by Fritz Hansen, Allerod, Denmark.

Object history
Part of a whole system of furniture, based on a curved triangular section frame locking at 45 degree angle. First shown at the International Furniture Exhibition, Cologne, 1968. Together with this designer’s chair 8101, this chair won the Danish Furniture Prize for 1970 (the first time this prize was awarded).

Major international competitions won as architect include Sydney Opera House and Zurich State Theatre. Chair shown in Les Assises Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris1968. Gold Medal, Royal Academy, Copenhagen 1944; Eckersberg Medal, Thorvaldsen Medal; German Institute of Architect’s Medal; Danish Furniture Prize 1970 (first time awarded)

A whole range of furniture, including tables and different sizes of chairs etc, is based on a system of component arcs locking at a 45 degree angle. It was first shown at the International Furniture Exhibition, Cologne 1968, and the designer was the first to receive the newly instituted Danish Furniture Prize, 1970, combined recognition of this chair and his system 8101.
