Place of origin

This silver-gilt filigree object is probably a frame, although the fittings have all been removed. It was bought as 18th-century Spanish, but the mark proves that it was made in the Kingdom of Sardinia, the region of mainland Italy around Genoa, after 1824. In the 19th century, filigree was a speciality of the Genoese region. Goldsmiths in the city of Genoa itself mainly made gold and silver filigree for an international audience, and exhibited and sold their products widely throughout Europe. The small towns and villages around Genoa made filigree jewellery in traditional styles, mainly for the local population. This piece has a base of interwoven wire, like a net, which was a speciality of the town of Vercelli.
