Wrought iron
England; 18th century
The chimney crane was an 18th-century addition to the open kitchen fireplace, a refinement of the simple 'ratchetted' pot-hook (see example nearby). Hung against the back wall of the hearth, it consisted of a swinging bracket with an adjustable sliding arm. This enabled a cooking vessel, suspended from the chain and hook, to be easily moved over any part of the open fire at various heights. By this means the cook avoided having to touch very hot and sooty pot handles and could control the cooking temperature more easily. With the development of the closed range such objects became obsolete.
